Tarot: the Aces

from Episode 53: Fortune & Flora: The Aces of the Tarot and Clove

In Tarot, each Ace card represents the purest essence of its respective suit. The imagery and symbols on the Ace cards convey various meanings, including the hand depicted on each card.

The Hand in the Sky:

In the traditional RWS system, we typically see a hand, seemingly suspended in the sky or emerging from a cloud, presenting the tool that represents its respective suit. These are also the Magician’s tools in the Magician card of the Major Arcana — the sword, the wand or rod, the cup and the pentacle or coin. In most interpretations, the hand represents the divine or spiritual force that initiates or offers this embodiment of the suit.

The Seed:

In a symbolic sense, the Aces of the Tarot can be likened to seeds because each one carries the purest essence or potential of its respective suit. From this the plant will grow.

Like a seed, each Ace holds within it:

  • Pure Potential: Just as a seed contains the potential to grow into a fully formed plant, the Aces represent the pure potential and energy of their corresponding elements (Wands/Fire, Cups/Water, Swords/Air, Pentacles/Earth) in the Tarot. They signify the beginning or seedling stage of an idea, opportunity, or aspect of life.

  • New Beginnings: Like a seed sprouting from the ground, the Aces herald new beginnings and fresh starts. They symbolize the initiation of a journey or the planting of seeds for future growth and development.

  • Manifestation: Seeds require the right conditions to germinate and grow, just as the Aces require action and intention to manifest their potential. The Aces encourage us to take action, make choices, and nurture the seeds of our ideas or goals in order to bring them to fruition.

  • Fertility and Creativity: Seeds are often associated with fertility and the creative process of growth and renewal. Similarly, the Aces represent fertility of the mind, heart, spirit, and the material world, offering opportunities for creativity, inspiration, and abundance.

  • Strength in Small Beginnings: Despite their small size, seeds contain tremendous potential for growth and transformation. Likewise, the Aces remind us that even small beginnings can lead to significant outcomes, and that every journey starts with a single step or seed.

The seed is a useful metaphor for the Aces — but they also encourage us to plant the seeds of our own intentions, nurture them with care and attention, and trust in their potential to grow into something beautiful and fruitful.

More Number One Associations:

The Root Chakra is associated with the element of Earth, is located at the base of the spine and governs our sense of safety, security, stability, identity and foundation. The number one is also associated with the Sun – which also represents our identity in astrology.
